Replacement Window FAQs

How do you measure for replacement windows?

Accurate measurements are essential when replacing a window, as even small mistakes can affect the fit of your new window. That’s why we highly advise having a professional handle the measurements for your window replacement. If you prefer to take your own window measurements, begin with the horizontal width:

  • Horizontal width: Measure at three points—top, middle, and bottom. Once you have taken these measurements, use the smallest of the three values as your final width.
  • Vertical height: Measure at three points—left, middle, and right—and use the smallest measurement as your final height.
  • Depth: Make sure to measure on all sides of your window.

How much will it cost to replace windows?

Window replacement prices may vary depending on several factors, such as size, style, and other considerations. At Window World, we have options available for all budgets. Contact us today for a complimentary estimate to discover the cost of your project, and don’t forget to check out our current promotions.

How do you measure windows for blinds?

How you measure your window for blinds will depend on whether you’re using inside mount blinds or outside mount blinds. As you proceed with the steps below, consider the type of blinds you want to install:

Inside mount blinds:

  • First, measure the depth of your window frame.
  • Take measurements of your window’s width in three locations: the top, center, and bottom. Select the smallest measurement from these three as your final width.
  • Take measurements of your window’s height in three locations: the left side, right side, and center. Depending on the blinds or shades being installed, you will select either the smallest or largest measurement.
  • Avoid deducting anything from your width or height measurements, since manufacturers will account for allowances and deductions.

Outside mount blinds:

  • Measure the desired width for your blinds, ensuring to include an additional 1 ½” on both sides for the best coverage.
  • Start measuring the height from the point where your blinds will be hung, extending down to the window sill. Remember to allow for a 1 ½” to 2” overlap on top to account for the mounting hardware of your blinds.
  • Again, avoid subtracting anything from your measurements, since manufacturers have already factored this in.

How do you clean windows?

For sparkling clean windows, follow these easy steps:

  • Begin with a vacuum to eliminate larger dust and debris.
  • Clean your window sash and frame with a soft cloth and a mixture of soapy water.
  • Use a paper towel (or lint-free wipe) along with a glass cleaning solution, either purchased or homemade, to wipe the glass panes.
  • Remove the window screens and wash them using a straightforward solution of soap and water. Be certain to allow your screens to dry in the air after washing.

How do you replace a window screen?

Window screens are an essential functional and decorative aspect of your windows. If your window screen has serious damage, such as holes or tears, you should replace it as soon as possible. Follow the steps below to do this:

  • Start by taking the window screen off your window.
  • With the screen laid flat, take out the current window screen mesh from the grooves that hold it in position.
  • Lay out and extend the new screen mesh over your window frame, leaving some excess around the edges, and cut it using the tool of your choice.
  • Use a spline roller to secure the new mesh into the grooves of your screen frame.
  • Once the new mesh is in place, cut away the extra material along the edges.
  • Reinstall your finished window screen.

What is a window sash?

The window sash is the section of the window that keeps the glass panes and their components assembled together. Fitted within the window frame, the sash can be stationary or movable, based on the design of the window. Double-hung windows feature a sash that moves up and down, allowing fresh air to flow freely into and out of your home.
